The defendant, Luo Xianwen, served as the security captain at the Lianhua International Hotel in Guangchang County. At approximately 10:00 PM on September 18, 2012—driven by financial hardship—Luo instructed a security guard named Zhong Zhigang to purchase two bottles of beverages from a nearby general store. Luo then took six Valium tablets he had prepared in advance, ground them into a fine powder, and mixed the powder into the two bottles of "Nutri-Express" drinks. Shortly after midnight on the following day (approximately 12:00 AM), Luo instructed another security guard—Zeng Qinghui, who was unaware of the scheme—to deliver the two drugged beverages to the female receptionists on duty at the front desk, Zhang Yanhong and Xie Fen, for them to consume. Around 3:30 AM, while conducting a patrol near the front desk of the Lianhua International Hotel, Luo discovered that the female receptionists had slumped over and fallen asleep. Luo then entered the security monitoring room, ordered the guard on duty (Zeng Qinghui) to go out and conduct a patrol, and seized the opportunity to disable several of the hotel's surveillance cameras—including those covering the front desk area. Afterward, he returned to the hotel lobby and sent away the lobby security guard, Zhong Zhigang, by assigning him to stand watch in the monitoring room instead. With the hotel lobby now completely deserted, Luo sneaked behind the front desk; taking advantage of the fact that the receptionists were fast asleep, he ransacked the cash register drawer and stole 4,700 RMB in cash. Two uniformed receptionists sit idly at the front desk; one is scrolling through videos on her phone, while the other—sitting cross-legged—swivels back and forth in her chair as she gives herself a manicure. The Security Captain peeks around the corner to observe the front desk, then spots a security guard sitting on a sofa playing on his phone. The Captain taps him with his baton and says, "Playing on your phone again!" The guard gives a start, jumps up, and snaps to attention.
The Captain admonishes him, "When you've got nothing to do, go walk a few extra rounds instead of messing around on your phone all day long."
The guard replies respectfully, "Yes, sir. Yes, Captain."
The Captain pulls out two bottles of a nutritional drink and hands them to the guard. He gestures toward the front desk and whispers, "Take these over to the girls at the front desk—go butter them up a little."
The guard takes the drinks and responds, "Right away, right away." | Scene 02:
[View via Surveillance Footage] The security guard approaches the front desk and hands the drinks to the two receptionists. The group exchanges a few words; the guard then departs, and the receptionists—having accepted the drinks—settle back into their seats. The camera focuses on a half-empty bottle of nutritional drink sitting on the reception desk. It slowly pulls back, shifting its focus to the two receptionists. They appear drowsy—their eyelids drooping heavily as they yawn incessantly. Eventually, they slowly slip into unconsciousness; one slumps forward onto the desk with her legs crossed, while the other leans back in her chair. The camera moves to circle around them, capturing their full, slumped postures. Scene 04:
On the surveillance monitor, the two receptionists remain frozen in the sleeping postures seen in the previous scene.
Inside the small security office, the captain takes a sip of tea after observing the feed. He sets his teacup down with a heavy thud, rises, and exits the room. Scene 05:
At the hotel reception desk, the two receptionists remain unconscious. The security captain approaches cautiously; he glances at the nutritional drink bottle, then feigns an attempt to wake the two women, but they remain unresponsive. The captain gently shakes their arms and shoulders, yet they still show absolutely no reaction.
Growing bolder, the captain pries open the eyelid of the woman leaning back in her chair, revealing a vacant, unfocused gaze. He gloats triumphantly: "Haha! You fell right into my trap, didn't you?"
The security captain walks over to the woman slumped across the desk and lifts her up, propping her against her chair. As he does so, her crossed leg naturally slides down, her high-heeled shoe clicking against the floor. The captain opens the drawer beneath the desk, rummages through it to pocket the cash he finds inside, and tucks it into his shirt. He casts a wary glance around the room, looks back at the two women slumped limply in their chairs, and walks away. Scene 06:
At the hotel reception desk, the two women remain unconscious in their chairs; the camera pans slowly over their bodies. The woman whom the security captain had just propped up against her chair slowly—and uncontrollably—begins to slide downward. Eventually, she slips completely off the chair and onto the floor. The camera image slowly fades to black, bringing the scene to a close.
